Amidst the escalating impacts of climate change and the ongoing degradation of natural ecosystems, the European Union must intensify its commitment to climate and environmental policies. Reaffirming the European Green Deal is crucial not only for environmental protection but also for enhancing the EU's competitiveness, security, and societal well-being, according to Leena Ylä-Mononen, Executive Director of the European Environment Agency (EEA).
In a keynote speech delivered today in Brussels during a policy discussion titled “Staying the Course: Driving Sustainability Forward in a Shifting Geopolitical Context”, co-organized by the Friends of Europe think tank, Ylä-Mononen emphasized the urgency of staying the course on sustainability. She highlighted that recent political shifts should not detract from addressing the dual crises of climate change and environmental degradation, such as water scarcity and soil erosion, which pose long-term threats to economies, societies, and food security.
“These challenges bring future financial and societal costs that could become unbearable if action is delayed. Addressing them now is far less costly than dealing with their consequences later,” Ylä-Mononen noted.
The EEA Executive Director also underscored the broader definition of security in the 21st century, which extends beyond military and defense considerations. “A comprehensive approach to security recognizes the critical roles of environment, climate, and sustainability in ensuring long-term stability and resilience,” she said.
Calling for decisive action, Ylä-Mononen urged EU policymakers to ensure full implementation of existing climate and environmental legislation. She advocated for an accelerated focus on emissions reduction, climate adaptation, and environmental protection, while ensuring that vulnerable communities are supported throughout the transition.
Moreover, she highlighted the synergy between environmental ambitions and economic competitiveness, emphasizing that securing a stable natural resource base can strengthen the EU’s resilience and bolster its global competitive position.
This speech serves as a strong reminder that the European Green Deal is not just an environmental policy framework but a cornerstone for building a fairer, healthier, and more sustainable future in an era of shifting geopolitical priorities.
